Most beginners can sustain basic rallies and understand the rules within two to three sessions. Feeling comfortable on court typically takes four to six weeks of regular play. Padel has one of the shortest learning curves of any racket sport, which is a large part of why it has grown so rapidly across the UAE.

Padel is played doubles on an enclosed court. The serve must be underhand, below waist height, and land diagonally in the opponent’s service box. The ball must bounce once before being returned. After the bounce, the ball may be played off any wall. Scoring follows tennis – 15, 30, 40, game – with best of three sets winning the match.

Yes, for most beginners. The smaller court size means less ground to cover, the walls keep the ball in play longer making rallies more achievable, and the underhand serve is simpler to execute than a tennis serve. Players with no racket sport background consistently report feeling competent on a padel court faster than on a tennis court.

The continental grip is the most widely recommended starting grip for padel. It allows the same grip to be used for forehands, backhands, and volleys without switching between shots. To find it, hold the racket as if shaking hands with the handle, with the base knuckle of the index finger on the top bevel of the grip.

After the ball bounces once on the ground on your side of the court, it may hit any wall and remain in play. You can also deliberately play the ball off your own back or side walls to return it over the net. The ball cannot hit a wall before it bounces on the ground – if it does, the point is lost.

The most common beginner mistakes include serving overhand like tennis instead of underhand, forgetting the ball must bounce before hitting any wall, letting the ball bounce twice before returning it, and standing too far back from the net during rallies. Many beginners also underuse the walls defensively, missing opportunities to extend rallies and reset points.

The bandeja is a defensive overhead shot played with a slicing motion, angled downward to keep the ball low and maintain the net position. It is more controlled than a smash and used when a full overhead smash is not possible. Coaches generally recommend learning the bandeja after mastering basic volleys and groundstrokes, typically at the early intermediate stage.

A point is won when the opponents let the ball bounce twice on their side, hit the ball out of the court, fail to return it over the net, or touch the net with their racket or body. On serve, two consecutive faults lose the point. Scoring follows tennis – first to win six games by two clear games takes the set.

A smash is an aggressive overhead shot hit with power to end the point outright, similar to a tennis smash. A bandeja is softer and more controlled, used to maintain net position when a full smash is not safe. At beginner and intermediate level, the bandeja is more reliable and more frequently used than the smash during rallies.

The most effective default position for beginner doubles pairs is both players side by side at the net when attacking, and both at the baseline when defending. Moving together as a unit – rather than one player at the net and one at the back – reduces gaps and is the positioning approach most UAE coaches recommend for players in their first months of learning the game.
